Do I Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in NZ?
Straight-up answers from qualified Waikato arborists
Whether you need resource consent to remove a tree in NZ depends on your council's district plan, the type of tree, and where it's located. Here's a straightforward guide - with specific information for the councils we work under in Waikato.
There is no single national rule about tree removal consent in NZ - it varies by district plan. Each council maintains its own rules about which trees or areas require consent before removal.
Waipā District Council (Cambridge, Te Awamutu) - The Waipā District Plan protects certain significant trees listed in Schedule 3 of the plan. Removing a scheduled tree requires a resource consent. Trees in riparian zones (near waterways) may also require consent. We advise on this during your free site visit.
Hamilton City Council - Hamilton's District Plan includes rules around significant trees and vegetation protection in residential zones. Some older established trees require consent to remove, particularly natives and those on council's notable trees list.
Matamata-Piako District Council (Matamata, Morrinsville) - Protected trees are listed in their district plan. Check the plan maps or contact the council - or just ask us during your quote visit.
Waikato District Council (Huntly, Raglan, Ngaruawahia) - Similar rules apply. Notable and scheduled trees require consent; most standard residential trees do not.
In general, you're unlikely to need consent to remove a small ornamental, a fruit tree, or a garden plant. The risk of needing consent increases with: trees over a certain height or girth, native species, trees near waterways, and trees in notable areas or subdivisions.
If in doubt, call us. We assess trees for consent requirements during every site visit and can prepare the arborist report for your consent application if one is needed. We know the Waikato councils' requirements well.
